China's New Arctic Trade Route

The Ice Silk Road: A Trade Route Born of Necessity and Climate Change The Strait of Hormuz may have been closed to shipping for a while, but it's not the only chokepoint in the global trade network.

China has been exploring alternative routes, and its latest innovation is a 3,400 mile long frozen Arctic channel dubbed the 'Ice Silk Road'.

This route takes about 20 days to complete, half the time of the traditional Suez Canal route, and could potentially reduce China's reliance on vulnerable sea lanes.
