As Dorothy Heinrich from the University of Reading notes, “We do know what climate change trends look like in the Himalayas… There is high confidence of more heat waves, glacial retreat, permafrost reduction, these sorts of things that can drive things like landslides and glacial outburst floods.”

However, attributing specific events to climate change requires rigorous attribution studies using simulations. In this case, scientists are still trying to determine whether the disaster was linked to climate change.

One factor stands out as a key contributor to the severity of this event – the lack of rainfall beforehand. Hydrologist Hatim Sharif notes that “that defeats essentially every operational flood warning system in the world.” This means that by the time residents see the mud flow coming, it’s too late – running or fleeing by vehicle will only lead to more harm.

The only way to survive such an event is to climb up a hill at least 6m high. While this may seem like a daunting task, it highlights the need for innovative solutions to mitigate these risks. River level gauges that provide real-time data to authorities could give residents critical minutes of warning.

However, the potential for a repeat performance due to an ongoing blockage upstream is concerning. Qianggong Zhang from ICIMOD warns that there could be another flood on the horizon if measures are not taken to address this issue.

The Himalayas are a fragile and unforgiving environment, prone to sudden and catastrophic events. As we try to make sense of these disasters, it’s essential to recognize the complex interplay between climate change, topography, and human activities.
