NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has returned to studying the universe, but its precarious orbit means this may be its final lap around the block. The spacecraft was forced back online after a hiatus, and with two of its three science instruments operational, it’s providing valuable insights into cosmic events once again.

For 21 years, Swift has been one of NASA’s most versatile and valuable observatories. Its unique ability to track sudden, short-lived events across multiple wavelengths of light has made it an essential tool for astronomers worldwide. By quickly detecting outbursts and alerting other observatories, Swift has helped scientists gather crucial follow-up observations before fleeting events fade away.

While the mission won’t be entirely abandoned – Katalyst still plans to perform rendezvous and proximity operations with Link near Swift – this setback has significantly reduced the observatory’s chances of staying aloft.

With only one to two months left before reaching a critical operating altitude, the team expects Swift’s orbit to continue declining rapidly. This raises questions about the future of this remarkable spacecraft. Can we expect a repeat of Hubble’s dramatic rescue mission in 2009? Or will Swift succumb to its orbital limitations and meet a quiet end, its data and discoveries lost forever?

The uncertainty surrounding Swift’s fate highlights the growing challenges facing satellite operations in low Earth orbit. As our reliance on space-based telescopes continues to grow, so too does the need for innovative solutions to these problems. The development of in-orbit servicing technologies offers a glimmer of hope – but much more work remains to be done.
