Research in Phoenix, Arizona, discovered that a single large data center can emit as much waste heat as tens or hundreds of thousands of households, raising nearby land surface temperatures by up to 9 degrees Celsius.

Thermal energy networks offer some hope. These systems capture waste heat from data centers and pipe it into nearby homes and businesses, reducing power demand by up to 30%. This innovative approach is a glimmer of light in an otherwise dark landscape.

The world’s reliance on fossil fuels to power data centers is a ticking time bomb – one that threatens to undo decades of climate progress. It’s time to rethink our addiction to the cloud and acknowledge the true cost of convenience.
